Confused about the two-person rule? What the new government restrictions mean for you

The government made their latest announcement last night.

The Federal Government convened last night, outlaying the harshest measures to date to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

As of today, the previous gathering limit of ten people being able to gather in outdoor or indoor areas has been cut to two people. Confused as to what that means?

No more than two people can come together and meet at any one time in an indoor or outdoor place, including private properties. This excludes housemates or family members.

The overarching message from the government is to stay at home.

What can I leave the house for?

  • Shopping for what you need: For life’s necessities, i.e. groceries or other essential supplies that enable you to remain at home. It is advised to do this as infrequently as possible.
  • Medical care or compassionate needs: If you think you have coronavirus, either call your doctor (DON’T visit) or contact the national Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080. If you’re struggling to breathe or experiencing a medical emergency, call 000.
  • To exercise: If you want to go for a run with no more than one other person, that is permitted. If you’d like to go for a bike ride with your two housemates, that is permitted. If you’re a family of four and would like to take the dog for a walk, that is permitted. It is advised that common sense should come into play, however.
  • For work or education: For those who cannot work or learn remotely.

What about visiting family members who live at a different location?

If a family is split across two houses, they are allowed to meet. So you can go and visit your parents or a sibling, but common sense should prevail and the standard social-distancing measures should be put in place.

What else came out of yesterday’s announcement?

  • For those in financial distress, they can no longer be evicted from their rental property for the foreseeable future.
  • Outside gyms and skate parks have been closed as of today.

There were two other advancements made yesterday. As of today, all Australians will be able to consult their doctor via video chat while the government has also announced the launch of an iOS app called Coronavirus Australia to allow Australians to keep up to date with the latest health advice.
