Collingwood’s newest queer party lands in this sweaty basement club

Toaster lands at Collingwood Basement this Saturday with crispy techno vibes and phone-free dancing.

Naarm’s club scene gets a tasty new addition with the launch of Toaster, a queer party dedicated to serving up thick slices of classic techno. The inaugural event at Collingwood Basement promises a sweaty dancefloor experience where phones stay in pockets and the music does the talking.

Toaster’s concept centres around giving DJs proper time to build their sets, with three-hour slots allowing artists to craft golden-brown soundscapes that develop and evolve. The party positions itself as a space where classic techno takes centre stage, free from the distractions that can dilute the true club experience.

Toaster – Collingwood Basement

  • Where: Collingwood Basement, 0 Langridge Street, Collingwood
  • When: Saturday, 20 September, 10pm-4am

Estée Louder brings her reputation for blending darker electro realms with techno experiments to the Toaster launch in Collingwood. Her DJ sets dive into the shadowy corners of electronic music, designed to leave punters feeling both exorcised and energised. Through her CONTROL club night and mix series, she’s carved out crucial space for women and queer people in electronic music, hosting international guests including Miss Kittin, K-Hand, Paula Temple and Photonz alongside local talent.

Her performance credentials span premier events like Dark Mofo and Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, plus international ventures to NYC, Tokyo and Europe.

Jo Christy completes the inaugural Toaster lineup with her uplifting blend of house, techno, hardgroove and UKG coming to Collingwood Basement this weekend. The Naarm-based DJ and producer runs queer parties Transenergy and Work Wife, focusing on creating community connections through carefully curated music. Her diverse approach to genre-blending has earned support slots for international artists including Seth Troxler and Eris Drew & Octo Octa, plus a main stage debut at Strawberry Fields festival in 2023.

Both artists bring three hours each to craft their sonic journeys, giving them room to explore the deeper territories of techno without the constraints of shorter sets.

Collingwood Basement provides the perfect sweaty backdrop for this techno feast, with its intimate confines promising the kind of close-quarters dancing that makes underground parties memorable.
