Degree (and year graduated):

Bachelor Degree in Entertainment Management. Graduated in 2013.

What made you want to study Entertainment Management?

I’ve always loved music, but felt my interest for the business side of the music industry was stronger than my passion for playing music. I realised that I needed to work towards studying something that would open doors to the industry while also giving me experience and theoretical knowledge.

What have you been doing since graduating from Collarts?

I’ve been working on as much as possible really. After I finished my degree, I worked as a Stage Manager at Crown Casino and I also worked as the Assistant Production Manager at the Falls Music & Arts Festival. I was then offered a full-time job as the Entertainment Assistant for the Entertainment Department at Crown Melbourne where I worked for about 9 months. I then moved to a full-time job at Konkrete Agency & Touring and have also continued working casually at Crown.

What skills did you gain through your studies at Collarts that are helping you on your current career path?

I think studying gives you the knowledge necessary to get started in the industry, but it’s work experience that teaches you skills. Studying at Collarts gave me the ‘theory’ knowledge as well helping me to build relationships and connections, which then provided opportunities for internships (which are part of the degree) and work experience.

Highlight of your career to date?

Falls Music & Arts Festival! I learnt so much and worked with some incredible people.

Any advice you have for anyone wanting to enter into a career in entertainment management, booking, and stage management?

If you want to work in this industry, know what you want and do everything you can to make it happen. Always improve your skills and continue to learn– but never forget the people who helped you along the way.

You can apply for a degree with Collarts in Entertainment Management, Audio Production, or Music Performance online (collarts.edu.au) and start studying as early as May 25.  Or check out the Collarts Campus at their Open Day this Saturday May 16 from 10am – 3pm.
