Schoolhouse Studios is transforming an old Coburg Coles into a new arts hub.
Collingwood’s Schoolhouse Studios is on the move, relocating their beloved space to none other than an old Coles in Coburg. That might sound like a peculiar match but given the ingenuity of Schoolhouse, the oddity will be a stimulator not a hindrance.
If this is the first time you’ve heard of Schoolhouse, the guys are “a wildly experimental arts, performance and studio space that’s all about the people”, and have been part of the Melbourne’s cultural and creative fabric for around a decade.
Keep up with all the latest arts news, reviews and interviews here.
Offering a home for everyone from filmmakers to photographers, performance and drag artists, graphic designers, fashion labels and beyond, Schoolhouse has hosted exhibitions, gigs, parties, fundraisers, talks, drag shows and everything in between across the years.
The move to Coburg brings with it a wealth of opportunity. While Schoolhouse have successfully revamped three disused spaces in their time – in Abbotsford, Collingwood and Brunswick East – they’ve never been more excited about what Coburg brings.
And from all reports, the new space will be epic. There’s set to be a large loading dock for Schoolhouse to host parties and gigs, along with its own bar.
That’s on top of a separate events space, while Schoolhouse also hope to open a cafe at the new location.
To coincide with the big move, Schoolhouse have sent out a fresh expression of interest for anyone who wants to be part of the new space. If you’re a creative keen to get involved, get in touch with them at firstname.lastname@example.org.
