Clay McMath: In Over My Head offers astute observations and impeccable comic timing

Words by Bryget Chrisfield

Despite his towering stature, Adelaide comedian/podcaster Clay McMath admits he often finds himself in over his head in various circumstances – whether due to racism, his anxiety or just the randomness of life in general – hence the title of his latest show.

His dad’s African American, but McMath also identifies as “half white trash” and regales us with tales about run-ins with a school bully, suss AFL recruiter and racist American cop, the latter culminating in what he hilariously describes as an “authentic, local experience” during a Stateside holiday.

The LOLs come thick and fast, thanks to his self-deprecating humour and witty retellings of absurd situations. From gags about male pattern baldness to BBW (Big Beautiful Woman) porn, McMath’s material runs the full gamut. And there are a couple of moments, particularly those sharing specific autobiographical details, where he totally takes it there. Following one joke, McMath admits, “I hate how well that one does,” as we all laugh – somewhat guiltily – while shaking our heads.

He also throws in some helpful advice for those who have trouble fitting in: get used to living completely outside your comfort zone.

McMath’s astute observations, refreshing perspective on life, impeccable comic timing, easy onstage presence and excellent eye contact make the 50 minutes absolutely fly by until In Over My Head cleverly dovetails with a joke relating to his Japanese hairdresser, just one of this show’s recurring characters.

Homework: Listen to McMath’s podcast, Welcome To The Poddy, where he reviews movies and TV shows, pairing them with snacks.
Audience participation: None whatsoever, so do feel free to populate the front rows.
Pre-show music: Missy Elliott – Work It.
Best bit/s: Admitting he’s too afraid to look into his ancestry just in case he’s related to cancelled celebrities. We also appreciated his use of the word ‘betwixt’.

In Over My Head plays at The MC Showroom until 5 April.
