The event will see some of Australia’s best street dancers go head-to-head in the wide open expanses of Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Across two stages, 2 vs 2 battles will take place exploring the dance styles of hip hop, house and funk.

From 10am-3:30pm, a non-public Preliminary Freestyle Dance Battle will occur. From there, judges will select the best groovers, who will then go on to compete at an evening throwdown from 5:30pm-10pm – an elimination-style competition hosted by MCs.

What about the music? Well, City Sessions will not just be a display of Australia’s finest dancers, there will also be a bunch of artists bringing the beats. DJs Mero and Mothafunk will be soundtracking the event, providing the tempo for the hectic dance contest happening before them.

What’s more, to celebrate the many diverse forms of street dance Melbourne has to offer, City Sessions will also showcase communities such as House of Dévine, Jungle City, Burn City Waack and L2R Dance.

Cypher Culture [the organisation that hosts the event] supports dance that comes from the city. It’s the music, the people, the community. As Melbourne is such a diverse city, City Sessions is a great way for cultural exchange,” says producer of City Sessions, Efren Pamilacan.

“City Sessions started at a grassroots level in our city’s civic spaces and has provided an outlet for the wider street dance community to connect with the public in a celebratory manner.”
