The annual NAIDOC Week has just commenced to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and City of Melbourne has released Volume Six of their Looking Out, Looking In Spotify series to coincide with the occasion.
Curated by rising Melbourne R&B artist Kee’ahn, hip hop-inspired DJ and party starter Soju Gang and artistic chameleon DJ PGZ, the playlist features 68 songs by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Dive into the collection of tracks and you’ll listen to the likes of Alice Skye, Birdz, Lady Lash, Archie Roach, Bumpy, The Merindas, Kaiit, Rachael Lia, Emma Donovan and so many more.
The playlist draws from songwriters who have profound and incredibly important stories to tell. Their paths to becoming the artists they are today have been different from many others in the industry – their opportunities haven’t come easy and as a result, their messages are critical to us forging a better understanding of the music world around us.
“Celebrating the First Peoples of so-called Victoria and their diverse stories and experiences of hurt and healing and strength,” Kee’ahn says of the playlist.” We are on sacred country where songs have been sung for centuries and centuries. Hear those songs. Hear those words.
“This playlist highlights some of the voices of Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara, Wemba Wemba, Wergaia, and Mutti Mutti storytellers, leaders, children and matriarchs. Listen to understand, learn, empathise and empower and remember those who came before us.”
