Brunswick’s live on-stage dating show is as heart-warming as it is hilarious

Words by Staff Writer

Human Love Quest is Melbourne's beloved live onstage dating show and it's returning to the Brunswick Ballroom on October 31.

Presented by friends Xander Allan, Conor Gallacher, The Captain and Dr. Gretta, Human Love Quest brings the golden age of television dating shows into the future. The future being now. Today!

Marketed as being the antithesis of dating apps, HLQ uses a classic trope of three hopefuls vying for the attention of one solo contestant. It is all-inclusive and anyone is encouraged to apply, regardless of how someone identifies, their age group, or what they’re looking for out of an encounter.

With the additions of an homage to Dolly Doctor (romance advice segment Things Can Only Get Gretta) and their own live reading of submitted love notes from secret admirers in the audience, (Ahoy There), you’re guaranteed a night of quality entertainment.

How HLQ works

There are two rounds of dating and each paired-up couple will receive a complimentary bottle of bubbles and a private seat downstairs at the Brunswick Artists Bar, away from prying eyes but also in a comfortable public space. There is absolutely no pressure to see each other again after the show, and we do everything we can to make everyone feel as safe and comfortable as possible while the show is in progress.

The organisers have a zero-tolerance policy against intolerant and anti-social behaviour, and the expression of interest form that all contestants/hopefuls are required to fill out features a vetting process that will ensure every round will feature like-minded humans.

If you’re sick of the dehumanisation and apathetic repetition of scrolling through dating apps on your couch, occasionally swiping right, and eventually having a stunted conversation of small talk before never meeting up with each other, then come on down to human love quest. Putting the human back into actual human interaction since 2021.
