Having previously visited the country in support of The 1975 and The Wombats, the upcoming tour marks Circa Waves’ first headline tour of Australia and their first appearance in the country in over 7 years, having grown into one of Britain’s most influential and adored guitar bands in the interim.

Following their highly praised acclaimed 2020 LP Sad Happy, Never Going Under consolidates the continued upward trajectory of Circa Waves over the past decade. Out now on Lower Third, the band’s fifth outing has already received praise and support from triple j (Feature Album), The Telegraph, Clash Music, Dork Magazine and more. Never content with sitting still, the four-piece remain committed to evolving album by album, constantly developing their sound with each successive release, securing increasingly high chart positions alongside amassing an army of dedicated fans. Boasting singles ‘Do You Wanna Talk’, ‘Carry You Home’ and ‘Living in the Grey’, this latest stage in their illustrious career sees the band continue to push themselves into new territories and effortlessly cement their place in the scene. Coinciding with the album’s release, the band have also shared a new video for the title track single, directed by the band’s own Joe Falconer.

Written throughout the pandemic and produced by frontman Kieran Shuddall himself, Never Going Under is the most comprehensive Circa Waves album to date, both thematically and musically. On the song ‘Northern Town’, Shuddall sings of his father delivering him on the landing of their house, which leads onto ‘Carry You Home’, reflecting on the birth of the frontman’s own child – the 11 tracks here carve a path through the frontman’s entire life, and onwards into the future.

They say that becoming a parent changes your entire perception of the world, and it rings true for Shuddall. Becoming a father for the first time during the pandemic, the songwriter immediately began looking at the world around him differently, and seeing a different purpose for the songs he was writing. The band’s fifth studio album finds Shuddall and his band looking at a confusing, uncertain world through a new lens, but musically they have never sounded more sure of themselves. The path ahead is completely unknown to them, but they’re ready to tread it fearlessly.

Musically, it’s also the most wide-ranging record they’ve produced, from the sprightly indie-pop of ‘Do You Wanna Talk’ to the gigantic ‘Hell On Earth’ and blissful ‘Your Ghost’. Shuddall describes a “sad euphoria” at the core of his musical inspirations for the album.

Speaking about Never Going Under, Shudall says, “Never Going Under speaks to that uniquely modern phenomenon of genuinely not knowing what type of world our kids are going to find themselves in in 30 years. Physically, environmentally, politically we are completely in the unknown. That scares us all, but ultimately we know we can never give up on the future because how can you? The songs on the album are written differently from the previous work we’ve put out. They are written from the perspective of my son and also from my own current experience of the climate today.”

“Circa Waves has always had a certain world view,” he continues. “But now it’s through that lens of being a father and still not knowing what the hell is going on. Never Going Under is a snapshot of the fear we all feel today and the resilience we will need to get through it.”

Most recently, the band also collaborated with local party-starting stalwarts Peking Duk on their smash single ‘Spend It’, which has racked up support from triple j, Hit National Nights, KIIS Sydney & Melbourne Nights, Tik Tok Trending, JOY FM and many more.

Tickets for the Melbourne gig go on sale Friday, 20 January 2023 11:00 AM (Australia/Melbourne).
