The Bridget McDonnell Gallery Hampton will host an exhibition of paintings by brothers Daniel and Matthew Butterworth.
The Butterworth’s artworks range from confronting, angst ridden, close-up portraits to more humourous portrayals. The brothers work both individually and collaboratively. When working together Daniel usually begins the piece, layering paint until he feels he cannot add any more, before handing it over to Matthew to apply his own vision.
After completing a sign writing apprenticeship in 1992, Daniel Butterworth studied fine arts at TAFE as well as LaTrobe University. He has since had his work displayed in Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and Warrnambool Art Gallery. Together with his brother he has created a variety of works. Their 2010 piece White Trash, which features a bent VB can lying in the grass, now retails at $3,600.
Included in the exhibition is Daniel’s short listed 2010 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize entry Best F’N Self Portrait Ever as well as his depiction of a man’s Y-front underwear titled Smike (pictured above).
The Butterworth Exhibition opens at the Bridget McDonnell Gallery in Hampton on Saturday March 12 and continues through to April 2.
