1. Randy Newman – Naked Man
Naked man would have to be one of my favourite songs of all time. To me it’s the perfect pop song. Plus, Randy Newman writes the music for Toy Story… and that’s badass.
2. Tom Waits – Gin Soaked Boy
I think that this is one of the best guitar/drums/vocals songs I’ve ever heard, the simplicity of the beat and the parts mixed with the best guitar tone ever makes for one hell of a song.
3. Aretha Franklin – Respect
I love the fact that this song was originally released by Otis Redding about a woman, Aretha gets her hands on it, reverses the roles and makes the song 100 times more popular. Respect.
4. Carol King – (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
Originally written for and released by Aretha Franklin, I can’t help but love Carol’s version better. Everything on Tapestry is amazing, I can’t fault that album. Don’t even get me started on Smackwater Jack!!!!
5. The Beach Boys – Help Me, Rhonda
When I was about 5 years old I insisted that every Sunday was Beach Boys day. The only albums Mum owned were Today and Wild Honey. Being five I was a little too young to get Wild Honey so I listened to Today on repeat all day. Although the album is full of songs to do with gender, Help Me, Rhonda was always my favourite.
