Boronia Station is getting a plaza, 3,000 new plants and a safety overhaul

Major construction is underway at Boronia Station, kicking off a big transformation for the local precinct.

Boronia Station Upgrade works have officially begun, with the project set to deliver a stack of accessibility, safety and amenity improvements when it wraps up in spring this year. The upgrade has been a long time coming for commuters who use the station regularly, and the changes on the way are pretty substantial.

A centrepiece of the project is a new landscaped community plaza on Dorset Road, which will bring more green open space, seating and a proper community gathering spot to the area. It’ll also make it easier to move between the station and Boronia’s busy shopping precinct; a connection that’s long been a bit awkward to navigate.

To make getting to the station safer, a new signalised pedestrian crossing is part of the package too. Meanwhile, Lupton Way will be closed to traffic from 27 March until late September to allow crews to widen the station concourse, build new platform shelters, and upgrade seating and lighting throughout.

Visibility across the plaza and station area is a big focus of the lighting upgrades. An upgraded pick-up and drop-off zone on Lupton Way, better footpaths to both station entrances and more bike hoops for cyclists are also on the list.

Greenery gets a serious boost too. More than 50 new trees and 3,000 plants and shrubs will go into the ground across the station precinct, Boronia Station Reserve and the new plaza. A new pocket park near Boronia Junction Shopping Centre will include garden beds, trees, seating and a nature play area.

The Victorian government unveiled the final designs for the precinct last year, with Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams showing off plans for a striking new station forecourt and an expanded concourse to improve connections across the rail line.
