Boris Brejcha: ‘The mask has become an extension of my identity — it’s not just a piece of wardrobe’

"It’s liberating and unifying because the mask makes the experience less about me as an individual and more about the shared moment.”

You can think of the hard shell suitcase legendary German minimal techno producer Boris Brejcha carries on tour in a few ways. On the one hand, says Brejcha, it’s a practical carry accessory for his headphones, decks, and performance mask. On the other, it’s a symbol.

“It represents the journey, creativity, and all the ideas I carry with me from one performance to the next.”

This January, Brecha is slated to play Australian shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. The tour follows his 2023 Australian visit.

“One thing I learned is how much Australians value authenticity and connection. The fans are deeply passionate and bring an unmatched energy to every show. So for this tour, I want to create an even more immersive experience, blending new sounds with visual storytelling to make every moment unforgettable.”

The tour, which focuses on fostering the connection between himself, his music, and his fans, is all about “pure energy, deep emotions, and unforgettable experiences”.

It follows 2024’s Another Dimension tour. Brejcha performed three-plus-hour shows in Europe, UK, and North America on that one. He performed on a custom-built stage, in a shower of pyrotechnics, to tens of thousands of ecstatic fans.

“The synergy between the music, visuals, and the crowd’s energy was surreal,” says Brejcha, (reflecting on the epic techno, house, and trance explorations, fire bursts, and laser lights on the Hanover stop of that tour).

“It felt like we created another world together for those few hours — a place where music and emotions merged perfectly.”

After such a show — and there are many like this — coming back down to earth can be a process for Brejcha.

“After Hanover, I spent some quiet time with my team, reflecting on the energy of the night,” he says. “Usually, I need solitude — maybe a glass of wine or some chill music — to process everything and recalibrate.”

Brejcha originally started making music on drums and keyboards in bands. After he discovered electronic music, he got into trance, before migrating to techno.

He released his first music in 2006, but 2015 was a major new chapter in his career. He founded the music label Fckng Serious, which serves as a platform for his own releases and a stable of marquee artists including Moritz Hofbauer, Ann Clue, and Frieder and Jakob.

Last year, Brejcha released three new albums, including Christmas Mix 2023, which explores a more cinematic approach, marrying seasonal melodies with his signature techno beats.  “It’s the first time I’ve incorporated orchestral elements into a mix, which was both challenging and inspiring,” Brejcha says.

As prolific as three albums in a year is, it’s the outcome of a work rate Brejcha says he intends to continue in 2025.

“Three feels just right — it allows me to balance quality with output. Each release is an opportunity to showcase a different aspect of my sound.  For 2025, I aim to maintain this balance, though inspiration may always push me to surprise myself.”

Fans are familiar with the spectacle of Brejcha performing in a signature joker mask. He first wore the mask while preparing to play a show in Rio de Janeiro, taking inspiration from the city’s iconic Carnival.

With the mask, he unlocked ways to express himself that were different from other acts. And it’s stuck ever since.

“The mask has become an extension of my identity — it’s not just a piece of wardrobe; it’s part of how I connect with my audience. One big realisation is how it shifts focus entirely to the music and atmosphere. It’s liberating and unifying because the mask makes the experience less about me as an individual and more about the shared moment.”

Brejcha describes his music as “high-tech minimal”, a blend of his favourite elements of techno, progressive house and trance.

After his Australian summer tour, he is taking his Reflections tour to more techno party spots around the globe.

“2025 is going to be a big year! I’m excited about new music releases, some groundbreaking collaborations, and expanding my live shows… with even more immersive visual experiences. Touring in new cities is also on the horizon, so there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Boris Brejcha plays at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Sat Jan 25. Visit here to get tickets for this show and his other Australian tour stops.
