Bonfires, lanterns and dancing: This winter solstice party celebrates the darkest day of the year

winter solstice

Your winter solstice will be flamin' hot.

If there’s one thing Melbournians like to do, it’s complain about the weather. We have it rougher than most other major cities in the country and we’re not afraid to make a scene about it, with our matching puffer jackets zipped up to the neck.

But the winter can also be beautiful. Frosty mornings, hot and hearty soups, having an excuse to stay cozied up inside all day – the season definitely has its bright side for those who choose to look.

CERES Winter Solstice

  • The event will take place on the evening of June 24
  • It will include activities, performances, food and drink a fire sculpture ceremony

This year to honour the winter solstice the CERES environmental park, education centre and urban garden will be hosting its annual party – a celebration of all of the joys of winter held on the shortest, darkest and coldest day of the year.

On June 24, the Brunswick park will be transformed into a winter wonderland. Brave the cold and you’ll be rewarded. They’ll have a ton of live music, dancing and entertainment, as well as piping-hot treats to keep you warm from the inside out.

Sip on mugs full of mulled wine, spicy chai or hot cocoa and nibble on bites from the CERES Merri Cafe & Bar or one of the many food trucks.

There will also be glow-in-the-dark face painting, paper lantern-making for the little ones and plenty of gorgeous light installations to admire before the main event: setting the massive ceremonial fire sculpture alight.

Information about the entertainment lineup and performance times is expected to come out soon. Last year’s event, which featured belly dancing and fire shows, sold out quickly – don’t miss your chance to attend this year.

Tickets to the CERES Winter Solstice party on June 24 are on sale now. To grab yours, head here.
