When Jazz promoter Diana Allan decided to tour visiting American gospel singer Marilyn Keller. Melbourne jazz piano legend Bob Sedergreen decided to surprise her with a then unknown combination of emerging musicians. He chose bassist Gareth Hill and drummer Sam Young, brilliant young graduates of the ANU Jazz course, he nicknamed them the “Canberra Raiders” and pairedthem with the warm articulate and happy sounds of Melbourne tenor saxophonist, Savannah Blount whose passion for jazz had been acknowledged by Bob and Australia’s most prominent reed man Don Burrows.
The group not only impressed the promoter, the audience, but also Marilyn Keller, taken by surprise at their ease of performance with no rehearsal. Tonight, we reunite this group, all who now are well known and established Melbourne players. Don’t miss this one-off performance.
