Bloodlines – A Gothic Cabaret

107.jpg

Set in the walk-in-wardrobe-sized front room of South Melbourne’s quirky Butterfly Club, Bloodlines is right at home, the off-beat nature of the venue gelling perfectly with the unpredictable cabaret vibe.  Kicking off with Storer appearing out of nowhere strumming eerie chords on his ukulele, the show blends songs about psychopaths, serial killers and a variety of Storer’s less desirable ancestors with his vignettes about his ex-boyfriend and the cupcake-related drama which evidently tortures him to this day

Storer’s pianist is also excellent, providing a vivid musical landscape and, at times, a workmanlike straight man to Storer’s madcap lead.

If you are a fan of cabaret or an aficionado of the darker side of music served up by Tom Waits, Nick Cave and the like you will most likely love Bloodlines. And if you don’t, there’s a good chance you will find some laughs here too.  Not for the squeamish.
