Blackhearts & Sparrows offer boutique booze that won’t break the bank

Words by Greta Brereton

If you’re sick of the selection at your supermarket bottleshop, it might be time to give something else a try.

Sibling-run liquor merchant Blackhearts & Sparrows have been stocking a carefully curated collection of beer, wine and spirits since opening their first store in 2006.

Almost 14 years on and they have ten Victorian locations and have also expanded into the ACT and Tasmania. This success is thanks to the ethos of owners Paul and Jessica Ghaie, who believe that access to fine wine shouldn’t be exclusive or expensive.

The duo have a fondness for small, independent producers, sourcing most of their drops from local makers alongside a thoughtful selection of international labels.

You’ll find brews from familiar names like Moon Dog, Bodriggy and Stomping Ground, as well as spirits from Starward, Four Pillars and Patient Wolf. There’s also a huge range of reds, whites and bubbles from Australia and beyond.

Stores are still open so you can pop in and have a chat about what tipple would be best for you, but with $1 same-day delivery from Monday to Saturday for customers within 12km of Melbourne’s CBD, you don’t even need to leave the house.
