Ben Pobjie makes me happy. But, then again, I’ve never seen his stand-up before, so I approached the show with trepidation. I didn’t want to have an experience which would fundamentally change my relationship with the author of the satirical masterpieces and witty quick-fire tweets which brighten my day on a semi-regular basis. It didn’t. What it did was provide me with a glimpse of the person behind the prose.
The show is personal, made even more so by the intimate nature of the Son of Loft theatre/broom cupboard at North Melbourne’s Lithuanian Club. Loosely divided into six chapters – self-esteem, childhood, black dog, love, sex, and the highlight of the night, towel – the show moves from one area to another of Pobjie’s life as he shares his inner thoughts.
While in need of some structural work, the show is warm and funny, and Pobjie genuinely engaging and endearing. If you’re a fan of his written work then Wearing A Towel presents a chance to get to know the man behind the monitor as he continues to craft his stand-up style.
