With Melbourne Music Week only a few sleeps away, today we’ve made it easy for you to find an event up your alley.

The many events going down at Melbourne Music Week cross a number of different genres. That’s what you get from 300 artists (95% local) across 23 locations over 10 days from December 3 – 12.

So with this in mind, we’ve done our best to separate them all into broad genres out for your pleasure. Techno heads out for a rave? We’ve got you covered. Acoustic connoisseurs out for a family picnic? Too easy. Take a gander at our list below, find one you like and book it in today!

Electronica

Kick Ons: The Operatives

Taking place on Friday December 3 from 11.30pm, following through until 7am the next morning, The Operatives are turning the Sub Club into a massive dance party with acts like Foura, Jade Zoe, Nam, Soju Gang, and lots more.

Luke Howard + RESPONSVE

Talented composer Luke Howard has teamed up with digital artist RESPONSVE to create an intriguing sounding ‘digital experience’. The show is said to be a truly hypnotic event, combining Howard’s minimalistic soundscapes with RESPONSVE’s visual mastery. It’s happening at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Monday December 6.

Georgia Maq + Go Sky

This one, while pushing the boundaries of electronica, might surprise you as Georgia Maq’s recent debut album Pleaser showed a different side to the Camp Cope frontwoman. This event going down at the Melbourne Museum on the 27th of January celebrates the best of it. Supporting her is genre bending group Go Sky, who are lauded for their immense punk energy.

MMW Club: Stable Music & ASW Presents – Awesome Soundwave Live

Awesome Soundwave is one of the coolest Aussie labels – run by Carl Cox and Christopher Coe, they are dedicated to putting out music from the best live electronic artists. It’s going down on Tuesday December 7.

Experimental

Melbourne Cocooned

This event will take you to another place and calm you down. It’s called an ‘immersive sound healing experience’, a mix of looped stems, gongs, guitars and field recordings, it’s a magical mix that truly needs to be heard to be believed. It’s happening outdoors at Queen Vic Gardens on December 5.

MESS: Residents Reveal

Another inaugural event, MESS and MMW team up to bring two talented musicians into Melbourne’s music scene. This year, it’s Nina Buchanan, who brings an original flare to synthesisers and dance music and Nick Roux, who is performing the ‘Symbiotic Horn’, an interesting set described as ‘half human half machine’ read more about that here. It’s happening on December 5 at Meat Market.

Fem Fantasy Presents: Hot Fem Summer

Going down at The Toff in Town on Thursday December 9, this event will bring some awesome beats to ears of all types. They are keen to create a space where people can feel accepted and are keen to push boundaries.

Hip Hop / Rap

Comin Down The Calder…

Happening at The Curtin on Wednesday December 8, Comin Down The Calder… features talented Aussie rapper Dallas Woods, electronic duo Galaxy Hop, and the music of the talented Nadia Phillips. They are three big names from our state, who are representing the best of regional Victoria.

Sensible Soiree’s: Writing On The Wall

There’s a pretty cool block party happening at container bar Section 8 on Saturday the 4th of Dec. They are showcasing some of the coolest up and coming MC’s and lyricists like Clegs, J-Red, Pricie and Jordan Dennis to name a few. It’s a free event too!

Acoustic

An Afternoon in Naarm

Australia holds some of the most talented First Nations artists, who often don’t get a big enough stage as they should. This event features some of Naarm’s most talented First Nations artists like Allara, BricKy B, Madi Colville Walker, and Charlie Needs Braces. It’s happening at Queen Vic Gardens, and it’s free.

Jazz / Soul

Carlton International Jazz Festival

Going down at Colour Club on Sunday December 5, the Carlton International Jazz festival returns with the super talented Holly Moore, a saxophonist and virtuoso who has taken the world by storm. The festival will also feature music from the Snow Bros, and The Colour Club Jazz band, who are fronted by members from up and comers Mildlife.

Live Music Safari: Tiana Khasi + Beatnik Collective + Colette + More…

Also taking place at container bar Section 8, this event finishes up the MMW, taking place on Sunday December 12. It’s an 8 hour extravaganza featuring some of our best soul and jazz stars, like Tiana Khasi, Pietro, and many more which can be checked out here.

Rock / Punk

MMW Club: PINCH POINTS + CLAMM + Delivery + Zig Zag

This event, going down at Max Watts on Sun December 5, features some of Melbourne’s best up and comers in the rock / punk world, like PINCH POINTS, who have garnered a lot of attention across the country with their unique post punk stylings, the band have compared themselves from bands like The B52’s to Aussie rockers HEXDEBT.

MMW Club: Anti Fade Records

Happening at Max Watt’s on Wednesday December 8, Anti fade records is celebrating their amazing artist roster with a star-studded event. Jazz rockers Bananagun headline the night, with supports from Terry,  Smarts, and Spiritual Mafia.

Live Music Safari: Press Club + Face Face + Way Shit

The Live Music Safari returns this year with a number of awesome events across the week, but on Sun 12th of Dec at The Last Chance, there’s a massive rock show going down, featuring mammoth performers like Press Club, Face Face, and Way Shit. Best of all, this is a free event too!
