I know what you’re thinking, ‘Jeez, Beat has been a bit burger crazy lately,’ and you’re not wrong. It’s all because last issue we welcomed a burger special to the mag which had us checking out the cheesiest, most bacon-stacked, pickle-garnished burgers in town, so can you really blame us? The special unveiled the big dogs, the small dogs, medium dogs, and everything in-between and we’re not over it yet. Burger Love in South Melbourne is certainly worth another mention. The eatery stays true to the philosophy that cooking with love makes everything taste better. Plus, the eatery has been flippin’ since 1994 so they have history backing them too. Personally, I’m all about their Mushy Loveof cheese stuffed and deep-fried whole portobello mushroom, lettuce, tomato, onion, Burgerlove sauce, and xxx bbq sauce. And when I am feeling like something classic, I’ll order the Burger Love with a simple beef patty, lettuce, tomato, American cheddar and burgerlove sauce. Head down to their Prahran, South Melbourne or St.Kilda stores for a warm-hearted meal.
For years I have kept Indian food strictly as a takeaway option, but after dining at Mukka I now have a new reason to go out. Their restaurant – quaintly tucked among the Brunswick Street bustle – offers honest Indian food that’s also imaginative and classic. Plus, they serve Indian cocktails which I’m shocked I’ve never tried before – like their Bloody Mahrani of organic vodka, tomato juice and their housemade spice mix of dill, white pepper, celery salt and turmeric. Their food is just as impressive, like their famous dosas which are an all-day South Indian staple of a light savoury pancakey crepe made from a homemade fermented batter of rice and lentils. Or my favourite, their banana leaf fish fry marinated in a spicy paste of fresh garlic, ginger, tomatoes, green chillies and desiccated coconut. Head down to Mukka to satisfy your next tummy grumble, and say hi to Prateek.
A cafe by the name of Serotonin conjures up images of a blissful space where happiness lives. However, never could I have imagined the joy that I experienced at Serotonin last week. The eatery opposite the sweet Burnley train station exists in a stylish light-filled space and offers health-conscious meals to be enjoyed on your choice of a cushion, swing – or to my delight – on the grass across the road. How they create their flavours is endlessly impressive and I especially love how each dish is so delicately placed before you by their glowing staff. Try their Positive Pancakes, which are actually banana pancakes served with banana ice-cream, berries and coconut yoghurt covered in strawberries, roasted almonds and organic agave. Pair this with their adorable gingerbread lattes – which have smiley faces dusted on top – and you’ll be singing to the gods all day long.
