AWME Q&A: OKA

Hello. Who are we speaking with and what’s your band doing at AWME 2015?

Stuart Boga Fergie, AKA DidgeriSTU. I’m playing didgeridoo with my group OKA from Sunshine Coast, QLD.

What do you think is unique about AWME and its role in cultivating Australian music?

It gives a great opportunity for a lot of Australian bands to listen, interact and expose their music with many experienced industry people from around the globe.

What can punters expect from the atmosphere of AWME and from your show?

The vibe is always electric at AWME as people discover new acts and new sounds from around the world. OKA’s music is electric dreamtime roots. A high-energy new sound reflecting traditional Australian Indigenous culture with roots in reggae, dub, jazz, funk and electric tribal beats.

What’s been the best ever set that you’ve experienced, or played in, at a festival in past years?

This year we played a standout three-encore performance at one of the biggest electronica festivals in Europe, the Ozora Festival in Hungary.

Who are some artists that we should definitely be catching this year?

There are some great acts this year, like Yirrmal, Emma Donovan & the Putbacks, Ngaiire, Kingfisha and my favourite, OKA.

If a movie was being set in AWME 2015, what would be the plot?

An epic, chaotic car chase like in the latest Mad Max, combined with the drama and heart warming triumph of a movie like Forest Gump. AWME is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

OKA play AWME 2015, which goes down from Thursday November 12 – Saturday November 14. The programme also includes Mojo Juju, The Audreys, Skipping Girl Vinegar.
