Asia TOPA Radar returns in August with a bumper lineup of artists from across the Asia-Pacific.

It’s the final event before the much-anticipated return of the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts Festival in early 2025.

“This is our biggest Radar lineup yet and we’re thrilled to have some incredible Asia-Pacific artists join us for another unforgettable night, this time taking over The Edge at Federation Square. This is your chance to hear directly from artists who create extraordinary dance, music, digital art and cross-cultural collaborations,” said Asia TOPA’s creative director Jeff Khan. “All while eating, drinking, mingling, chatting and connecting with our creative communities.”

This edition of Asia TOPA Radar is hosted by a powerhouse in art and activism and member of iconic queer Indigenous collective FAFSWAG (Aotearoa), Elyssia Wilson-Heti. Elyssia will be joined by:

  • CONJAH, the collaborative force of Jahra Wasasala and ooshcon, merging Fijian and Samoan heritages into a multifaceted practice spanning street dance, physical theatre, poetry, voice work, and digital art. They’ll be sharing insight into their mahi (work) and its integral relationship with the world.
  • Liquid Architecture (LA), helmed by Javanese-Australian creative producer and curator Kristi Monfries, is Australia’s leading organisation for artists working with sound and listening. Their program sits at the intersection of contemporary art and experimental music, expressed through a range of presentation, publishing, research and commissioning activities.
  • Trailblazing senior First Nations dance artist and choreographer Raymond Blanco (Bunyi Bunyi Bumi) is joined by groundbreaking director, choreographer and dramaturg Priya Srinivasan (Sangam/Bunyi Bunyi Bumi).

“Food is central to the ‘Asia TOPA experience’,” Khan continues. “We are thrilled to have Nongkrong – a brilliant Indonesian-Australian art and food collective curating the food offering for this edition of Radar. Alongside tunes from the incomparable DJ, Haus of Ralph.”

About Asia TOPA Radar

Asia TOPA Radar is a series of events that bring together the latest stories and inspiration from artists from across the Asia-Pacific. Inviting artists to share and discuss the works of art that are inspiring them right now: the books they’re reading, the films they’re watching, the performances they have their eye on, the exhibitions they’ve seen: an up-to-the-minute playlist of what’s making artists tick, creatively.

In March, Asia TOPA Radar was hosted at The Substation and featured FAFSWAG (Aotearoa) along with Melbourne artists Mindy Meng Wang & Monica Lim and Efren Pamilican. Last year, the inaugural Asia TOPA Radar event was hosted at the University of Melbourne’s Market Hall and featured conversations and performances with The Pacific Sisters, Luke George & Daniel Kok and Thukral & Tagra.

Asia TOPA is a joint initiative of Arts Centre Melbourne and the Sidney Myer Fund and is supported by Creative Victoria.

The final edition of Asia TOPA Radar will take place on Wednesday 14 August at Fed Square’s The Edge. Tickets are on sale now at artscentremelbourne.com.au.
