Rising to fame as a semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent, Malevo captured the nation’s attention with its heart-pounding energy, fiery passion and blazing raw talent. The avant-garde dance company has since toured the globe, sharing stages with the likes of Cirque du Soleil and Latin popstar Ricky Martin.
Named as an official Cultural Ambassador to the National Identity of Argentina, Malevo offers an explosive modern take on the Argentinian folk dance, Malambo, an unmistakable and percussive style of traditional dance passed down through generations.
The all-male troupe combines elements of flamenco and zapateados (stomping) with pulsating drums and percussion from hand-held boleadoras (a tool made from leather and stone traditionally used for hunting) in a highly dexterous, exhilarating fusion of dance and drumming.
Director, choreographer and dancer Matías Jaime shared his excitement about bringing this world-renowned show to Australia for the first time: “We have travelled the world sharing our culture and traditions with people from all walks of life, but we have never been to Australia before. We can’t wait to bring our energy to the stage and show audiences Down Under just what we can do!”
Australian producer Andrew Kay echoed this sentiment: “Malevo is an unbelievably impressive and genuinely thrilling performance spectacle that has left jaws on the floor around the globe. It speaks a universal language of epic passion and prowess and I’m delighted that Australia will soon get to experience the international phenomenon for themselves.”
Tickets will go on general sale from Thursday 12 October through www.artscentremelbourne.com.au.
