Construction on Arden Station began in 2018, with crews excavating 330,000 tonnes of rock and soil up to 20 metres underground to build the station and pour its platforms. During construction, Arden served as a testing ground for technology that was later rolled out across the other Metro Tunnel stations.
Station design features a massive brick archway entrance, nodding to North Melbourne’s industrial history and character. Skylights allow natural light to flow 14 metres underground to the platforms below. Artist Abdul Abdullah has created a large-scale artwork that defines the station’s eastern façade.
If North Melbourne wins Saturday’s AFLW Grand Final, the club will host a family day from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday at Arden Street Oval, with fans able to catch the train directly to the celebrations.
Metro Tunnel represents the biggest transformation of Victoria’s rail network in 40 years. When it opens on Sunday, it will double the size of Melbourne’s underground rail system and deliver hundreds of new services each week across the network.
Beyond match days, the new station will provide better connectivity for locals and visitors to North Melbourne, with improved access to the area’s recreational facilities, businesses and residential developments. As the Arden Precinct continues to grow over the coming decades, the station will serve as a key transport hub for the neighbourhood.
