Haven't we all, at one point or another, wished we were French?

The chic outfits, the laidback, laissez faire attitude… There’s something dreamy about France that the rest of the world just can’t shake.

Award-winning writer, director, performer and dramaturg Nicola Gunn knows this feeling well. Her desire to be a French actress (despite not actually being French) is explored in her latest piece, Apologia, set to show at the Malthouse Theatre from August 6 to 18.

The work features a series of hilarious and absurd encounters focused on the outsider’s perspective of Frenchness. A French actress is fired for her bad behaviour. A pair of tourists become disappointed with the city of Paris. A translator tries to make sense of her relationship with her mother and her language.

Throughout the show, Nicola Gunn shines bright, using her experience background in videography, installation and choreography as well as all facets of theatre and performance to create something utterly her own.

With a Master of Arts from Melbourne’s own RMIT University, Gunn has made a name for herself with shows such as Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster, which she’s toured throughout Europe and North America.

Beloved for her at once silly and brilliant style, Gunn takes viewers on a journey through human connection, the fallibilities of language and the feeling of being translated. Showing at The Malthouse for the first time ever, it’s expected to be a very special event.

With only a very short season and limited tickets available, we suggest you get your hands on some before they sell out.
