Ami Williamson takes her funny, heartfelt One Woman Show to Wesley Anne

Few gigs promise funny songs about women, a Joy McKean tribute and Al Pacino jokes in one night, but Ami Williamson does.

Ami Williamson’s One Woman Show rolls into Wesley Anne on 23 October, with two sets and no support act, so she has the room to herself all night.

She’s the daughter of country music artist John Williamson and has toured alongside him, but Ami Williamson has also taken the stage in classical settings, and has carved out a fiercely independent path as a singer-songwriter.

Her sound moves from indie-folk into more jazz-influenced songs, and her shows pair serious musicianship with a sharp sense of humour.

Think the observational comedy of Tim Minchin crossed with the deeply personal songwriting of Joni Mitchell. The whole thing has been likened to a roller coaster, swinging between heartfelt and hilarious while showing off her versatile voice and stage presence.

So what actually goes down across those two sets?

Ami Williamson starts with songs from her latest album, which get stuck into life and family, before swerving into a funny take on Al Pacino’s lifestyle choices.

There’s a song called Joy McKean, a tribute to Slim Dusty’s wife and songwriting partner, plus the tragic story of suffragette Emily Davison.

Folk covers sit alongside a ballad version of the Angels classic Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again.

Ami Williamson also shows off her classical piano training with The Soldier’s Wife, a haunting original, then lightens things up with funny and poignant songs about women including The Mother-in-Law Song, before a send-up of her early days with the Australian Opera to finish

Across the night, the mix covers songs from her albums, classic folk covers and comedy, with plenty of piano thrown in.

From the sentimental through to the silly, the set covers a lot of ground. Sounds like a wonderful time, in our opinion.
