Masterful West African Griot Aboubacar Djéliké Kouyate Live at Roha
Master griot, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Aboubacar Djéliké Kouyate brings his vibrant West African sound to Footscray’s Roha Bar & Restaurant on Friday 5 November at 6 PM.
Born in Djoliba, Mali, into the prestigious Kouyate line of griots dating back to the 13th-century Malian Empire, Aboubacar began formal training at age seven under his father, Adama Kouyate of the legendary Super Rail Band Bamako. Following decades of performing across West Africa, France, and Australia—leading acclaimed ensembles like Badala Foly and co-founding Melbourne’s Djoliba Rattler project—he brings a rich lifetime of heritage, rhythm, and musical mastery to the stage.
Aboubacar blends traditional Mandenka songcraft with an exuberant, contemporary interpretation, combining voice, instrument, and rhythm into compelling, danceable sets—all set within an immersive cultural atmosphere featuring authentic Ethiopian cuisine, traditional coffee ceremonies, and craft drinks.
Don’t miss an extraordinary evening of West African music, storytelling, and authentic hospitality in the heart of Footscray.
