A Coen Brothers retrospective is coming to Melbourne cinemas

Melbourne’s Classic and Lido Cinemas will screen the writer-director duo’s filmography from February until June.

Elsternwick’s Classic Cinemas and Hawthorn’s Lido Cinemas are celebrating the films of brothers Joel and Ethan Coen with a career-spanning retrospective over the coming weeks.

Kicking off on February 4, the two cinemas will screen a different film by the iconic writer-director duo each Thursday and Friday night at Lido and Classic, respectively.

  • Classic and Lido Cinemas are hosting a retrospective revisiting the films of The Coen Brothers
  • The retrospective runs from Thursday February 4 until Friday June 4
  • Screenings will be held weekly on Thursday (Lido Cinemas) and Friday (Classic Cinemas) nights from 7pm

The Coen Brothers’ extensive catalogue has earned them 48 Academy Award nominations and seven wins over the years, with titles such as FargoNo Country for Old MenBarton Fink and The Big Lebowski becoming cult classics.

Kicking off with their debut film Blood Simple (1984) on Thursday February 4, the program tracks the brothers’ filmography in chronological order, spanning titles including Raising Arizona (1987), The Ladykillers (2004) and True Grit (2010) before concluding with their most recent release, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

The retrospective will also serve as the first-ever chance for cinema-goers to see The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on the big screen since it was released on Netflix three years ago.
