Victorian government releases final designs for a new Melbourne train station in West Tarneit as construction ramps up.
Major construction is now underway on a brand new Melbourne train station in West Tarneit, with the Victorian government unveiling final designs for the new transport hub on the Geelong Line. The station is scheduled to open to passengers next year.
West Tarneit Station will feature two platforms connected by an accessible pedestrian underpass, along with a 400-space car park and four-bay bus interchange. These facilities are designed to make public transport connections easier and safer for commuters in one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing areas.
Station precinct plans include extensive landscaping with 17,000 native trees, community seating areas, and separated walking and cycling paths on both sides of the rail line. Cycling infrastructure includes a 26-space Parkiteer facility near the main entrance of the new Melbourne train station and 30 bicycle hoops throughout the precinct.

Community feedback shaped the final designs for the new Melbourne train station, with locals expressing preferences for accessible, vibrant and colourfully-landscaped station facilities. A new road connecting from Leakes Road will service the southern side, complete with a signalised intersection at Heartlands Boulevard.
Bus services will expand with the station opening, including a new route connecting West Tarneit Station to Tarneit Station via Tarneit north. Existing Route 182 will be realigned to include the new station as part of the government’s $162 million bus service investment.
The new station addresses growing demand on the network, particularly at nearby Tarneit Station, which handles almost two million passengers annually as the busiest regional station outside Southern Cross. West Tarneit Station forms part of broader improvements including 189 additional weekly services on the Wyndham Vale Line and nine-carriage trains during peak periods.
Construction follows the removal of three level crossings in Deer Park and Ardeer, creating a boom gate-free corridor from Deer Park to the city. The Level Crossing Removal Project is delivering West Tarneit Station as part of ongoing network upgrades across Melbourne’s west with a number of other new Melbourne train station projects underway.
