The Story Of The Clash & The Specials
England, late seventies. Punk and ska begin to overlap. Guitars cutting through basslines carried into Britain from Jamaica years earlier. Rooms filling with kids from different scenes, suddenly wearing the same t-shirts. Punk stripped it down. Ska and reggae carried the pulse. By 1978 and 1979, The Clash and The Specials moved through the same circuits, same bills, same pressure in the air.
It returns to the stage at Brunswick Ballroom, intact.
Black Market Clash play the songs of The Clash without smoothing the edges. Should I Stay Or Should I Go sits next to Straight To Hell, Safe European Home, Lost In The Supermarket and Janie Jones. There is no hierarchy and it’s not just a greatest-hits run. Victor Stranges, who came up through Melbourne’s 1980s punk scene, shares guitar and voice with Garry Allen. Stu Thomas on bass, drawing on years with Dave Graney and Kim Salmon. They approach the material with respect and reverence. Nothing out of place.
Loonee Tunes come at The Specials from inside the bloodstream. Not revival, but continuation. Formed in 1982, they are Australia’s longest-running ska band still performing regularly. Early in their career, they were channeling Dexys Midnight Runners before realising the room moved more to ska. A Message to You, Rudy, Too Much Too Young, Gangsters and Concrete Jungle. Horns tight. Rhythm locked. Movement follows naturally. The room doesn’t stay still.
One night only.
Mark Churchill (Band)
Join Mark Churchill and band for his first show back after time away working on new material. With support from Wriding & Notch Cut, expect a night of dark grooves, raw songs, and unfolding lo-fi textures.
Mark Churchill –
Mark’s music blends melancholic, melody-rich, off-kilter songwriting with chilling atmospheric synths and hypnotically static beats, crafting a sound that is nostalgic with modern sensibilities.
Wriding –
Wriding are a slowcore band from Naarm. Their pastoral lyrics and windswept arrangements evoke a turbulent, drought-stricken desolation – and sometimes, the warm glow of a back door light left on.
Notch Cut –
Notch Cut is a new project from Zoe Irving (Mares), Gemma Helms (Hooper Crescent, No Sister, Mares) and Max Falović (Orange Moon, Esc, Great Outdoors), who make rhythmic bass driven music centred around landscape, uncertainty and shifting ground.

Sea Wolves Howl
Based on the true stories of a remarkable local community, Sea Wolves Howl is a vivid theatre with catchy songs.
Early each morning, an intrepid intergenerational group of women and gender fluid people meet on the beach. They enter the sea, join hands so no-one can chicken out, howl like wolves, and immerse in the freezing water.
Five characters take us from home to the shore, into the brine and back, each step offering a particular physical challenge evoking stories, memories, fears, triumphs, connections, courage and laughter. When they brave the wild sea, the differences that divide them on land are stripped away as they expose their bodies and souls to the water, to nature, and sometimes to each other. This cold-water therapy becomes a whole-life therapy, unleashing a wildness and playfulness that says yes to the universe with a mighty howl.
A metaphorical plunge into the joys and challenges of cold water swimming, Sea Wolves Howl features older female and gender-fluid actors strutting their stuff in their togs, speaking and signing the words of people whose lives have been transformed by finding their wet and wild together.
