Define your genre in five words or less:
Eccentric, lyrical pop/folk
So, someone is walking passed as you guys are playing, they then go get a beer and tell their friend about you… what do they say?
They say, “What are we doing here instead of at that venue where I just heard Anna Smyrk And The Appetites?! Let’s go back there and get a hit of beautifully crafted storytelling set to hot horn lines and sweet grooves.”
How long have you been gigging and writing?
I wrote my first song age 13. Cringe-worthy. I’ve been playing with The Appetites since late 2009.
What has been your favourite gig you’ve played to date?
Playing the Port Fairy Folk Festival was awesome. But then, so was busking outside the Union St supermarket the other day with my ukulele. All these little kids held hands to form a circle and got their dance on.
Which band would you most like to have a battle/showdown with?
Fleetwood Mac. I’ve had Don’t Stop stuck in my head for days; someone must pay.
What inspires or has influenced your music the most?
Gardens, modern literature, travelling and cheap red wine.
What do you think a band has to do these days to succeed?
Be hard-working, shameless self-promoters, good at what they do and lucky.
Do you have any record releases to date? What? Where can I get it?
We’re releasing our debut EP early 2012.
Why should everyone come and see your band?
Because we play intricate songs about timeless themes in arrangements that will surprise the pants off you, and knock your socks off. Might be better to just come along naked in the first place.
When are you playing live/releasing your album/EP/single/etc?
Wednesday October 12 at the Northcote Social Club. We’ll be launching the video for our song Seek Out The River, directed by Bethany Young. Anna Paddick and band will open the show. It shall be a rip-snorter of a night!
