Chatting Influences with La Hazel

Lucas (vocals) As a vocalist my earliest influences stem from old school soul/ryhthm & blues artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. When that new wave of neo-soul came out in the ‘90s from the likes of D’Angelo and Lauryn Hill, I was naturally inspired by their smoothness coupled with hip hop grooves. I would say I was also influenced by modern acts such as The Internet and Jordan Rakei during the recording of Love Trick

Tim (bass) My playing is inspired by the likes of groove monsters such as Gary Willis, Jaco Pastorius and Derrick Hodge. Influences for this track were drawn from artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat and Snarky Puppy.

Anand (keys) I’d like to think my playing is a mix of influences from jazz/hip hop artists like Robert Glasper, buttery neo-soul smoothness from cats like D’angelo, hip hop and repetitive elements from groups like Slum Village, and gritty changes from more modern neo-soul acts like Hiatus Kaiyote.

Matty (drums) For me influences were found through famous drummers like Chris Dave and Questlove while I was learning how to lay down phat-groovey beats, just like these guys do so well. Studying these cats naturally landed me at D’Angelo, The Roots and The Robert Glasper Experiment first and then led to the likes of Erykah Badu and then J-Dilla which opened an endless pit of hip hop and neo-soul feels. While in the studio recording Love Trick I was mainly vibing on The Internet and Anderson Paak.
