Operation Mincemeat, the hit musical about duping Hitler, is coming to Melbourne

Words by staff writer

Operation Mincemeat, the Olivier and Tony-winning musical about a wartime corpse, opens at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre in September 2027.

Here’s the part that sounds invented.

In 1943, British intelligence dressed a dead man as a Royal Marine officer, stuffed his pockets with fake documents pointing the Allied invasion at Greece and Sardinia, and floated him into the sea off the Spanish coast.

The Germans found the body, believed the paperwork and shifted their defences to the wrong islands.

Hitler sent reinforcements to Greece, leaving Sicily thinly held, and the Allies landed there largely unopposed. Helping dream up the plan was Ian Fleming, a naval intelligence officer who later invented James Bond. The whole con went by the name Operation Mincemeat.

A musical comedy built by British company SpitLip, it opened in a tiny London theatre in 2019 and kept climbing: Southwark Playhouse, the West End’s Fortune Theatre in 2023, then Broadway in 2025. It drew a devoted following well before the big houses got involved. Five performers play every role, switching wigs and accents between spies, generals and the corpse itself. Along the way it collected the Olivier for best new musical, a Tony, and, by the producers’ count, 189 five-star reviews.

Melbourne lands the first Australian season, with the Comedy Theatre on Exhibition Street set for a September 2027 opening. The rest of the national tour is still under wraps. Other cities will be named down the track, and the waitlist is where they’ll show up first.

The Australian run is one stop on a sprawling world tour that also hits the UK, US, Canada, Mexico, China and New Zealand. General ticket sales haven’t opened yet. Marriner Group and Ticketek are the only authorised sellers, and anyone on the waitlist gets first access when the pre-sale starts.

No on-sale date yet, so the waitlist is the only way in for now.
