Pawn & Co has spent almost 14 years telling drinkers everything inside was for sale, and now that includes the venue.
The Greville Street fixture is up for grabs through a confidential campaign its owners have dubbed a secret auction, running 10 October to 12 December. No bidding room, no paddle in the air, no sense of who else is circling.
Anyone keen on Pawn & Co registers online, qualifies, inspects the two-level space privately, then lodges a written offer that stays hidden from rival bidders. The result is announced on 12 December, though the owners warn a strong bid could close the deal well before then.

Opened in late 2012, the bar built its name on a gag that happened to be true: the taxidermy, the gold-framed art, the vintage armchairs, even the bartender’s bow tie all carried a price. Past curios include a portrait of Kramer, a ride-on lawnmower, a cryogenic chamber and a church organ rigged to pour cocktails. For the right number, drinkers could always buy the building, a promise the owners insist was never just patter.
Timing, the owners reckon, has finally caught up with the concept. Immersive, step-inside venues are everywhere now, which is partly why they’re ready to hand Pawn to a team that can make it a sole focus. Co-founders Josh Lefers and Stephen Wools are tipping more than $8 million into new Ballers Clubhouse sites in Brisbane and Geelong, building on rooms in Melbourne’s CBD, Carlton and Adelaide. Stakeholder Steve Thomas has folded the recently opened Arcane Fairies into his Storyville stable. Pawn & Co Brisbane isn’t part of the deal.
Trading carries on right through the campaign, so there’s still time to drink among the oddities before the keys change hands. The booth has runs on the board too: Dom Dolla played there long before the stadium dates, as did visiting and local favourites such as Sharam Jey, J Phlip, Boogs and Made in Paris. Buddy Franklin and Dylan Alcott have both passed through the doors.
New owners will settle whether Pawn hangs onto its weird streak. For now, the oddest thing for sale in the building is the building.
