Hi there. Who are we speaking to and what do you do in the band?
Jack Hookey here, the original Small Town Alien. I do literally everything (performing, writing, producing, marketing) in this band as no one cares about it as much as I do. But I am lucky enough to have some dynamite players with me from time to time.
How’s the reception been for your shows? People are saying some pretty positive things.
Usually people either really hate it or really enjoy it. And that’s right where I want to be. I have watched people leave after I’ve said a certain word or idea that doesn’t sit well with them, and I enjoy that power immensely.
Thematically, the new album Songs For Kids With Cool Parents is pretty broad. Tell us about these ideas you’re putting forward and where you’re getting them from.
One theme is “let’s get out of this conversation before we kill ourselves.” That came about because I had a conversation with someone once that was so pointless and mundane that it actually made me want to kill myself (seriously). Another theme is “you make me feel like I’m not a homosexual.” That idea stemmed from a guy I knew who was gay but met a girl he liked so much that he became not gay.
How famous do you reckon you’ll be after this album launch?
Hopefully slightly more famous than I am now which is not really at all.
