Melbourne is about to get a four-storey rotating snow tunnel you can ski in year round

Melbourne
words by staff writer

Melbourne's west is about to become home to the world's first rotating indoor snow tunnel, and it opens before the end of 2026.

Snowtunnel, the Australian startup that’s been quietly engineering this thing under wraps locally, has locked in its global headquarters in Melbourne’s inner west, just 11 kilometres from the CBD.

The centrepiece is a four-storey-tall rotating drum lined with real, groomed snow that never stops moving. Skiers and snowboarders ride it like a treadmill, meaning the hill never runs out. It is, genuinely, an endless mountain, and it exists in Melbourne’s west.

The concept sounds like something from a fever dream or a 2050 World Expo pavilion, but it’s real, it’s patented, and it’s about to start welcoming riders. A Test Rider Crew is being assembled right now, people who’ll get on the thing before anyone else does.

What makes this genuinely strange and exciting is the scale of the problem it’s solving. Around 95 per cent of people on earth have never skied or snowboarded, ever.

More than half of all countries have no ski fields whatsoever. And even for those that do, snow seasons are shrinking. Snowtunnel isn’t pitching itself as a novelty; it’s pitching itself as the future of snow sports on a planet that’s running out of reliable winters.

The Melbourne site isn’t just a theme park attraction either. It’s the global HQ, the proof-of-concept, and the launchpad for an international rollout that’s already in motion. An exclusive territory deal for the United Kingdom has been signed, with more regions in active discussion.

What’s actually inside:

  • The Snowtunnel™, a 12.5-metre-high, 16-metre-long rotating drum with over 600 square metres of real groomed snow, running at variable speeds for all ability levels
  • Snow Play Zone, fresh powder produced daily for families and first-timers who just want to touch snow without booking flights
  • Professional Progression, certified instructors and structured programs from absolute beginners to advanced riders
  • Full Gear Hire, boots, boards, skis, the lot. No expensive kit required to walk in and ride

It’s the Urbnsurf model. Take something that required geography, luck, and a long drive, and drop it in the middle of the city. Except instead of a wave pool, it’s a rotating mountain that fits inside a warehouse in Melbourne’s west.

Wild, frankly.
