Line dancing, lawn bowls and a big cause: Melbourne’s most fun fundraiser

Words by staff writer

A community fundraiser at Melbourne's Flagstaff Bowls Club is bringing together lawn bowls, line dancing and climate justice on 13 March.

The event, Bowls for Benefit, is hosted by Marni O’Connell — an environmental science and international relations graduate — in support of UN Women Australia’s EmPower programme, which directs funding toward women and gender-diverse people disproportionately affected by climate change.

The night runs from 6pm to 10pm and is designed around community connection, with Disco Rodeo running a line dancing session alongside open bowls lanes for guests to enjoy throughout the evening. A representative from UN Women Victoria will also speak on the night about the impact of the fundraising.

The event will feature a raffle with prizes donated by a range of local sponsors, including Mayfield Studios, ReWine, Stomping Ground Brewery, Comedy Republic and Slow Clay Centre. O’Connell is also using the fundraiser as a launching pad for a personal challenge — she’ll be completing the Bay of Fires hike in late March, using the trek as a platform to spotlight climate justice and gender equity.

All funds raised on the night go directly to UN Women Australia’s EmPower programme. Tickets and further details are available through the Humanitix event page linked below.
