Maribyrnong is hosting a massive free street dance event in Maddern Square

Maddern Square is about to become ground zero for Melbourne's breakdance community when Pistol Pace throws Double Trouble Vol. 3 on 28 March.

Double Trouble Vol. 3 is a free street dance and hip-hop event celebrating women and west-based artists in the breaking scene. Organiser and breaker Pistol Pace recently secured funding through Maribyrnong Council’s Love Your West Grants Program to bring the third edition of the event to Footscray’s Maddern Square, with support from local not-for-profit street dance organisation Cypher Culture.

Breaking culture thrives on energy, community and representation; and Double Trouble Vol. 3 is built around all three. By spotlighting women and western suburbs artists, Pistol Pace is creating space for voices and talents that don’t always get the platform they deserve in Melbourne’s dance scene.

Cypher Culture has been championing street dance in the west for years, and their support for Double Trouble Vol. 3 continues the mission of making breaking culture accessible and inclusive. Free events in public spaces remove the barriers that often keep people from engaging with dance culture – no cover charge, no exclusive venue, just open invitation.

Maddern Square provides the perfect backdrop for an event like Double Trouble Vol. 3. It’s a public space that already sees plenty of foot traffic, but activating it with breaking battles, performances and hip-hop energy transforms it into something else entirely. For a few hours, the square becomes the beating heart of Melbourne’s street dance community.

Women in breaking have been pushing the culture forward globally, and Double Trouble Vol. 3 puts that progression front and centre. This isn’t tokenism; it’s recognition that the scene is richer, more dynamic and more exciting when diverse voices are leading the charge.

Western suburbs artists often operate outside the inner-city spotlight, building vibrant communities and honing their skills without the same level of visibility or resources. Double Trouble Vol. 3 flips that script, making the west the destination and celebrating the talent that’s been there all along.

Pistol Pace received up to $10,000 through the grants program to make Double Trouble Vol. 3 happen. It’s part of a $115,500 funding round supporting 15 projects across Maribyrnong between February and June, all aimed at strengthening cultural vibrancy and community connection.

Street dance thrives when it’s accessible, communal and unapologetically itself; exactly what Double Trouble Vol. 3 promises to deliver. Whether you’re deep in breaking culture or just curious about what a cypher actually involves, 28 March is your chance to find out.
