The Count’s Danilo Rojas – Cueca: Tradition & Innovation in Latin Jazz

Bolivian-born Australian pianist and composer Danilo Rojas makes his debut at The Count’s, performing music from his album Cueca — his first recording created in Australia. A leading figure in Bolivian jazz, Rojas explores and reimagines the traditional Cueca, one of Latin America’s most important musical forms, through the lens of contemporary jazz.

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear pianist Danilo Rojas performing ‘Cueca’ – an album composed and recorded in Melbourne with an ensemble of outstanding Australian and Bolivian musicians. Moving seamlessly between tradition and innovation, Rojas show weaves soulful rhythms, intricate improvisations, and heartfelt storytelling.

Joined by Al Kerr (drums), Mirko Guerrini (saxophones) and Emiliano Beltzer (bass), hear Rojas’s Afro-jazz compositions alongside reinterpretations of South American standards such as tango, huayño, and zamba, all enriched by the captivating voice of Ecuadorian improvisational singer Sarah de la Cerda.

The son of acclaimed Bolivian composer Gilberto Rojas, Danilo carries forward a deep musical legacy while celebrating identity, migration, and connection through virtuosic piano artistry and boundless creative spirit. Now based in Melbourne, he continues to actively perform, compose, and arrange music, including projects such as the Afro–Latino American Jazz Ensemble and the chamber group Camerata Tierra.
