Monster Fest returns to Melbourne with blood, guts and things that go bump in the night

Words by staff writer

Monster Fest brings nine days of genre cinema to Carlton featuring international premieres and Australian debuts.

Monster Fest’s first look programming is serving up everything from heavy metal horror to zombie comedy, because apparently filmmakers have completely lost their minds and we’re absolutely here for it.

Jason Lei Howden’s returning with Deathgasm II: Goremageddon, which promises to be even more gloriously unhinged than the original blood-soaked mayhem. Steven Kostanski’s taking a crack at sword and sorcery with his Deathstalker reimagining, while Joe Begos delivers alien invasion comedy Jimmy and Stiggs for when you need your extraterrestrial violence with a side of laughs.

Monster Fest

  • Cinema Nova, Carlton
  • Friday, 3 October to Saturday, 11 October

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

Australian horror gets proper representation with world premieres that sound absolutely bonkers in the best way. Phoenix Raei’s Rotten combines cannibalism, black magic and rotting disease into what promises to be a delightfully disgusting debut, while Matt Mirams’ Residence follows zombie apocalypse survivors heading to a medieval tourist attraction because apparently that’s where you go when the world ends.

International madness includes Steve Buscemi playing a serial killer marriage counsellor in the magnificently titled Psycho Therapy: The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer, plus a 4K restoration of cult classic Freaked for maximum weirdness.

Nine days of cinematic chaos await genre fans ready to embrace the beautiful insanity of modern horror filmmaking.
