Melbourne’s beloved La Mama Theatre has announced the first events of its quarterly La Mamica program, featuring four unique artforms set to dissect a diverse range of topics.

La Mama’s La Mamica 2021 program will kick off with Cinematica’s Love, exploring the theme of love in all its various forms, whether wistful, exhilarating, harrowing or traumatic.
Going down on Sunday February 14, the theatre will screen a selection of films, including a feature film by Iranian experimental filmmaker Rouzbeh Rashidi, and films by the likes of Audrey Lam, Barış Ulusoy, Irene Proebsting and Barry Brown.

Monday February 15 will see Anna Liebzeit perform Sounds Like Us, Like Love. Here, Liebzeit draws loosely on the performance-lecture form, combining live voice with electric guitar, electronic production and audio spatialisation in a new way of storytelling.
The next night, La Mama’s Poetica will feature readings from four poets. The lineup includes Ouyang Yu, who has published 128 books in both Chinese and English, and Melbourne poet and host of the podcast Poetry Says, Alice Allan.
Transdisciplinary artist, poet, filmmaker and creator of the Melbourne Fringe show Black to the Future, Maxime Banks will also be there alongside Brian Walters, a poet and barrister and a recipient of the Monash University Poetry Prize.
The cap off La Mama’s first run of La Mamica events for 2021, Cabaretica will celebrate Melbourne’s cabaret scene. Co-curated by Susan Bamford Caleo and Isabel Knight, and emceed by Maude Davey, the performance will feature the award-winning queer comedy troupe PO PO MO CO in act one, and jazz singer, cabaret artiste and gender transcendent diva Mama Alto in act two.
