The closure will also see the end of the record store’s bar, Crazy Arms.
First opening its doors in 1983, Fitzroy’s Polyester Records announced it will say goodbye this March in a Facebook post this afternoon.
“It is with many mixed emotions that we must today announce the closure of Polyester Records and Crazy Arms Melbourne,” the statement reads.
“Nothing lasts forever, but Polyester has endured in its Fitzroy home for an extraordinary period since 1983, with the Flinders Lane store operating 2007-2014, both with much joy, mutual support and fond memories of the celebration of a seemingly endless amount of incredible music.”
The coming weeks will see the Polyester family celebrating their run through a series of special events, with details yet to come. Having hosted an incredible array of musicians and memorable moments across the past near four decades, the store’s owners have invited customers to share their memories – “in written, visual or audible form” – to commemorate the years gone by.
While the announcement is a sad moment for Melbourne music-lovers and the community at large, you can guarantee Polyester and Crazy Arms will be given a hell of a send-off.
