60 Seconds With…Malcura

Hey, who are we speaking with and what’s your role in Malcura?

Hello, I’m Bv, and I play guitar.

You guys are certainly genre benders; your sound centres around flamenco but also draws from progressive rock, pop and heavy metal. Why is melding genres gaining such popularity in Melbourne?

I think, especially in a city like Melbourne, people are always looking for something new and fresh when it comes to music.

Where does your love for flamenco music stem from?

Myself and Josh (Malcura’s other guitarist) both took lessons from Yossi Admon, who introduced us to flamenco music through acts like Rodrigo y Gabriela and Paco de Lucia. As a band all three of us have a wide range of musical influences, flamenco immediately struck me with its fiery rhythms and the absolute passion that its guitarists play with.

In 2015, Malcura spent a lot of time busking on Bourke Street. How was this experience important for your band’s development and, in a wider sense, important for the city’s aesthetic?

Busking has been invaluable in helping us become tighter as a band, and allows us to promote our music to far more people than we would normally be able to at a gig. I think busking is incredibly important to the feel and culture of Melbourne; it acts almost as theme music for the city.

You’ll be taking the stage of the Bendigo Hotel on Thursday July 21 in support of your self titled debut release. Tell us why we can’t miss this one.

How often do you get to see a couple of guys playing nylon string guitars and head-banging?

You’ll be supported by your mates Mr. Wolf and Kill Dirty Youth. What’ll these guys add to the rock laden atmosphere of the night?

They’ll add a dose of top notch Melbourne rock to complement the heavier side of Malcura. Make sure you get down to the Bendy early to catch them. Doors at 7.30pm
