Hi Jesse, thanks for taking the time to chat with Beat. You’ve just released your second record, Separation Street. Tell us all about it.
I wanted the record to reflect what type of artist I am and the way I interpret blues music. My debut album, released at beginning of 2013, was entrenched in the blues/soul genre and I really wanted this record to show people my progression of where I am going musically.
For the completely uninitiated, tell us about the music you make.
I try to incorporate as much inspiration from all genres of music that I have grown to love. It’s a huge goal of mine to write and play music that people can enjoy and recognise, so hopefully they are singing along with me.
Your music spans a range of genres, from blues to soul, reggae to roots and beyond. What music inspires you the most?
It’s very hard to pinpoint one specific genre, because I have a deep uniformed love for all music, whether blues/soul, or reggae/roots. The music I make is definitely a testimony to that and I hope that this album would showcase all that appreciation in one record.
You’ve got a huge launch planned at The Catfish this week. Tell us about the gig.
It’s to be a great afternoon with The Justin Yap Band setting an extremely high benchmark at 4pm, then we hit the stage with a full ten-piece band at 5pm. We got some great special guests lined up, so hope to see as many people there as possible.
