Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the Triennial Arts Grants support organisations that contribute significantly to Melbourne’s status as a creative city. “Melbourne is the most livable city in the world and our arts and culture credentials are a major contributor to that livability,” he said. “Our renowned reputation as a cultural capital did not happen by accident, it is a result of careful planning, strategy and investment.
“The arts also have a positive impact on our economy: Victorians spend $5.1 billion annually on cultural activities and 74 per cent of the state’s population lives in Melbourne.”
Chair of Arts and Culture, Councillor Rohan Leppert said supporting the arts is a priority for the City of Melbourne – from flagships as the Melbourne Festival and Melbourne Fringe, as well as innovative up-and- comers like Speak Percussion and Poppy Seed.
He stated, “In June this year, the City of Melbourne released the Arts Strategy 2014-17, a blueprint to ensure Melbourne’s arts scene continues to grow with the city. Supporting the artists and arts organisations who are producing projects in the city is a key part of this strategy.”
