All aboard: There’s a free ferry between Melbourne and Geelong for this month only

Hold onto your hats, folks, your commute to Geelong is about to get a whole lot more interesting.

While level crossings are removed on the Geelong line in April and May, a special free express ferry service will be transporting people between Geelong and Docklands. This means that you can leave your cars, coaches, and shuttle buses behind and take to the high seas for your daily commute.

According to reports, the Andrews Labor Government is delivering crucial level crossing removals works on the Geelong rail line, which will result in disruptions to Geelong trains in various sections from Tuesday, April 11 to Wednesday, May 3. During this time, coach replacements and shuttle buses will connect with metropolitan services, but the real highlight is the special free express ferry service that will be transporting passengers.

Victoria’s Big Build has partnered with Port Phillip Ferries to provide this direct ferry service for passengers each weekday. It will operate Monday to Friday, with one service travelling from Geelong to Docklands at 7 am, and a return service in the evening from Docklands to Geelong at 5.30 pm.

You too can start your day with a brisk sea breeze, a stunning view of the ocean, and a cup of coffee in your hand. The ferry features comfortable seating, work tables, charging stations, a cafe, and free Wi-Fi.

The journey will take 90 minutes and will transport commuters between Geelong (Steampacket Pier) and Docklands (Harbour Esplanade). Make sure to book online to reserve a spot on the ferry service, don’t forget your sea legs.

The Labor Government’s program of Big Build works is boosting the economy and creating more than 50,000 jobs. “Whether it’s removing level crossing removals, upgrading train lines or building new stations, we’re setting our state up for the future and we thank everyone for their patience while we get on with delivering a significant project for Geelong,” says Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan.
