College Lawn Hotel
Located down the quiet end of Greveille Street, the College Lawn Hotel manages to avoid the worst excess of Prahran. While you'll still find a casually fashionable crowd milling around and the odd popped collar, it's a laidback venue for the most part. It's also rather large, encompassing a lounge bar, public bar, function room, bottle-shop and two sun-drenched courtyards, plus a restaurant. The frontbar and lounge are relatively low-key and retain much of their traditional pub charm. College Lawn is one of the few venues in Melbourne that prefers Rugby Union over AFL and you can always catch a live match on their various TVs. For those in the inner east it's the unofficial home of Union. Still, it's the beer garden that attracts the lion's share of the attention. Renovated, lush and green, it's the preferred haunt of locals looking for a drink, and home to many a Sunday session. Speaking of which, you'll find a selection of local and imported beer options. Asahi, Guinness, Heineken, Tooheys New, Hahn Premium and Carlton are all available on tap, complimented with a selection of bottled imports. There's also a full accompaniment of wine, various top-shelf liquors and, if you ask nicely, a limited amount of cocktails. While bar snacks and a tapas menu is available, anyone with a serious appetite can sit down at the restaurant for a steak or chicken parma. If things get truly out of hand the hotel offers backpacker accommodation for less than a cab trip across town.
