What inspired you to make this event happen? The huge resurgence in vintage African music has fed into its modern forms, and eventually the electronic remix culture. Having an event dedicated to these sounds, and including the traditional performances in its most essential form – drums, voice and dance – will translate to a night of dance and celebration, with the live features elevating it beyond another club night.

What relationship do you think electronic music has with traditional and organic instrument playing? The relationship is growing closer all the time. I believe electronic music has become more flexible, more malleable. There will always be something special about people, masters of their instrument performing live in front of an audience.

You grew up in India and have travelled extensively through the Middle East, Africa and Asia. What have you experienced and seen musically that you wish to bring to Melbourne? I’d say that’s precisely what I am doing, bringing those influences through 15 years of performing as a live musician, DJ and producer in this country, and vice versa spreading our own unique melting pot of influences to the world.

How will yours (Nui Moon), Gio Gárcia and Mike Gurrieri’s DJ sets contrast from each other? Gio Garcia hails from Latin America so we can expect sounds of that origin. Mike has a long history of rocking dancefloors in Melbourne, and his rare Afro/Latin disco cuts are true tested party starters. I’m more on the Afro house and remix tip for this event.
