Verb Café

Slow down and step back to a simpler time, when good gals and beatnik boys would head to the diner for a shake and a shimmy to the jukebox. Tucked away at the far end of Flemington, across the road from Newmarket train station, Verb Café is a relaxed retro eatery that began as a book exchange many moons ago.

The place is set up with laminex tables, old soda signs and books on The Beatles. The café services locals and visitors alike for both breakfast and lunch at seriously affordable prices, with most menu items sitting below the $15 mark.

Their all-day breakfast features heaps of eggs, either classically done or build-your own. There’s also a beautiful sweet breaky menu too. The lunch menu includes a range of burgers, salads, pides and quesadillas. Our pick is the salmon salad with orange segments, feta, pistachios, tossed with mixed lettuce and horseradish aioli, but only if you can have a bite of the Middle Eastern lamb, fetta, hummus and tzaziki burger your mate ordered. Coffee’s from Atomica – Melbourne-based, 100% Aussie owned and operated – plus organic teas, yoghurt smoothies and booze.
