MICF UPDATES

The festival just announced that extra shows have been added for Danny Bhoy and Nish Kumar. You can now catch Danny Bhoy tonight and tomorrow night at Hamer Hall. If you’re looking to see Nish Kumar, he’s added tomorrow, 6pm at the Melbourne Town Hall.

MICF SELL-OUTS

Surveying the Melbourne Town Hall chalkboards lately, there’s been a sense of deja vu: the same artists seem to be selling out almost every single night. Some names that spring to mind are Alice Fraser and Aunty Donna, who are smashing it this festival season. As we reported, Ivan Aristeguieta has sold out his entire run, with tickets to a newly announced show expected to fly out the door. Rose Callaghan, who is presenting her debut solo stand-up show, has sold out three consecutive nights – and her season has only just begun. Dilruk Jayasinha’s Sri Wanka has also sold out three nights in a row, with only a handful of tickets remaining for tonight. With all this in mind, it’s absolutely worth taking action on your FOMO because, as we’re discovering this festival, there’s a very real possibility of MO (missing out). Here’s an extended list of the hottest tickets in town.

Alice Fraser – The Resistance

Amos Gill – Netflix and Gill

Anne Edmonds – That’s Eddotainment

Aunty Donna – New Show

Daneil Sloss – Dark

Dilruk Jayasinha – Sri Wanka

Ivan Aristeguieta – Chorizo Sizzle

Liam Ryan – Oh God It’s Behind You

Luke Heggie – Anythink Is Possible

Nath Valvo – Tongue In Cheek

Rose Callaghan – Rose Before Hoes

Zoe Coombs Marr – Trigger Warning

MICF ENTREES (Early Shows, until 7pm)

Ben Volchok – Ben’s Illustrious Fact Show: Episode 2

Sequels get a bad wrap. There are plenty out there that are amazing – some that are perhaps even better than the original. Ben Volchok hopes his latest show fits that bill, his fact-spectacular a follow-up to 2015’s illustrious show. It’s a mish-mash of various tales, a head-scratching quiz and, yes, plenty of facts. Volchok just might be the one know-it-all you actually like. Have a laugh and learn a thing or two Fri-Sat 6pm at Highlander.

Jay Morrissey & Danielle Walker – Illuminati Karate Party

She was a strange girl, he was a strange boy – can we make it anymore obvious? Actually, we can. Danielle Walker and Jay Morrissey have teamed up to present Illuminati Karate Party, boasting RAW Comedy Grand Final and State Final placings, television, radio and web appearances, as well as plenty of great stand-up performances. Now you know you’re in good hands, get yourself down to the Imperial Hotel, Mon-Tue 6pm and Thu-Sun 6pm.

MICF MAIN MEALS (Prime Time, 7pm-10pm)

Becky Lucas – Baby

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Becky Lucas’ career progression has been pretty special: she was a RAW Comedy grand finalist, before being hand picked for the festival’s own showcase of Australia’s best emerging stand-up performers, The Comedy Zone. She has since opened for Joel Creasey and Wil Anderson. Clearly she’s pretty good at what she does. Karl Stefanovic, at least, has described her as a “bloody weirdo”, which we’re going to interpret as a compliment. Lucas performs Baby, her second solo stand-up show, at the Victoria Hotel, Tue-Sat 7.15pm and Sun 6.15pm.

Colin Lane and Friends

Is it a talk show? A panel show? A variety night? Colin Lane’s show at this year’s comedy festival is shrouded in mystery. All we know is that he’ll be bringing three or four of his industry mates to the stage over three entertaining nights. We can’t even reveal the line-up. Still, considering the fact that Lane has been in the biz over two decades (as a solo performer and one-half of the critically acclaimed duo Lano and Woodley) it’s safe to assume he’s got some very special guests up his sleeve. Not actually up his sleeve, obviously, though that would make for one hell of a show. You can catch Colin Lane and Friends at the Melbourne Town Hall. tonight and Sat 9.45pm, as well as Sun 8.45pm. Three shows only!

Agony Live

“All you need is love,” declared John Lennon, way back in 1967. Be that as it may, love is a pretty complicated subject. Good thing some big names from the acclaimed ABC TV series Agony Aunts are hitting the Yarraville Laughs stage to unpack everything for us – from dating and falling in love, to moving in and losing a house. This live version of the hit series will be hosted by its creator Adam Zwar and feature your favourite Aunts and Uncles – Glenn Robbins, Lawrence Mooney, Fiona O’Loughlin, Dave O’Neil and Jo Stanley. There are just three opportunities to hear their wisdom – tonight at 9:30, as well as tomorrow at 7pm and 9.30pm – so book ASAP.

MICF DESSERTS (Late Shows, 10pm onwards)

Shaggers

Nobody says ‘shagging’ anymore, do they? Perhaps it’s coming back. You can mull that over some other time: for now, let’s talk about a show that’s become a late-night staple of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Shaggers has enjoyed sell-out shows in the UK, Europe and all over Australia, serving up jokes and anecdotes about sex. Get a little bit risque Fri-Sat 11pm at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow.

Chimp Cop Nights

Recently, a bunch of Melbourne’s most promising comics found their niche, conceiving the hilarious genre-mashing hit cop show comedy Chimp Cop. Now, Adam Knox, Ben Vernel, Rosie Vernel and Timothy Clark have returned to present the much-anticipated sequel Chimp Cop Nights. With praise for the show plastered all over social media, this is something you’re going to want to check out ASAP. Act now before this cult-hit becomes the hottest ticket in town. Catch it at the Imperial Hotel, Mon-Sun 10.15pm.

MICF SPECIALS (One-Offs and Discounts)

ABC 2’s videogame culture and review show Good Game is hitting the Melbourne Town Hall tonight for live multiplayer shenanigans. It’s probably worth clarifying at this point that, when we say ‘multiplayer’, we don’t mean a LAN party. There will be fun, friendly competition though. The show will feature all your favourites: Bajo, Hex, Nichboy, Goose, Hingers, James Rees, Jordan Raskopoulos (The Axis of Awesome) and special guests Tripod. They’ll put both their gaming cred and improv skills to the test as your perspective pivots roughly forty-five degrees every few seconds. Okay, that last bit is a lie, but the rest is 100% guaranteed. Also, it’s real life, so the graphics will be amazing. This is a one-night-only live show spectacular, so do a barrel roll and get your tickets ASAP. It all kicks off at the Melbourne Town Hall, 6:30pm.

When the clock strikes 11pm, the festival doesn’t wind up – it kicks on. Treat yourself to Comedy Bonanza at The Festival Club this evening, the variety show that features a who’s who of local and international stars. Tonight’s line-up includes MC Ivan Aristeguieta, Guy Montgomery, GB Labrador (Philippines), Joel Creasey, Urzila Carlson (NZ/RSA), Tim Vine (UK), David O’Doherty (IRL), and Tripod. The show will be followed by DJ Toot & Whistle.
